New study reveals vegetarian and vegan diets lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and death
A recent study published in PLOS ONE has found that adopting a plant-based diet significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, and overall mortality.
The comprehensive analysis reviewed nearly 50 studies from 2000 to 2023, focusing on the health effects of vegetarian and vegan diets, which exclude all animal-derived foods, including dairy. The research highlighted that both dietary patterns are linked to a lower incidence of cancer and ischemic heart disease, which is often caused by narrowed arteries.
The study further revealed that plant-based diets are particularly effective in reducing the risk of prostate and gastrointestinal cancers, such as colon cancer. Additionally, individuals following vegetarian diets showed a lower likelihood of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
These diets were associated with improvements in several risk factors for heart disease and cancer, including reduced body weight, lower levels of inflammation, and decreased LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
Researchers are continuing to explore the specific mechanisms through which plant-based diets confer these health benefits.
The findings suggest that the dietary components of vegetarian and vegan regimens play a crucial role in promoting cardiovascular and overall health, potentially offering a protective effect against major diseases and contributing to longevity.
