On Saturday:

Communal tension erupted in Binnakandi, Lakhipur following the elopement of an interfaith couple.

A day laborer, Abdul Mannan (35), from Binnakandi, allegedly fled with a young woman named Rikiyason from Scottpur tea estate.

The incident led to violent clashes, resulting in the damage of a mosque and several homes.

The situation escalated on Saturday evening when an enraged mob attacked Mannan's neighborhood, where around thirty families of the Hindi-speaking Muslim community reside.

Stones were hurled indiscriminately, and a mosque was vandalized. As a result, many residents sought refuge in nearby New Ramnagar.

Police forces from Lakhipur, Sonai, and Cachar, along with senior officials, arrived at the scene to control the situation. The police have detained the couple and are maintaining a vigilant presence in the area.

On Sunday:

A serious law and order situation erupted in Binakandi, Lakhipur Police Station, following the kidnapping of 19-year-old Lakhimoni Rikiason, daughter of Pandit Rikiason from Scottpur Tea Estate.

The primary accused, 32-year-old Md Mannan Ahmed, son of Sumir Ali from Binakandi Grant, was apprehended near Sonai during a special raid conducted by the Cachar police. The investigation revealed that Ahmed, who is married with two children, was involved in the abduction.

According to Police, today, at around 2 AM, while being transported to Lakhipur BPHC Hospital, Mannan Ahmed requested the police team to stop the vehicle for a nature's call at Shivpur, Moragong, Banskandi.

Once the vehicle halted, Ahmed suddenly attacked on-duty officer Lnk Jasimuddin Laskar with a heavy punch and fled into the open field, taking advantage of the darkness.

The police team immediately called out for him to stop, but he continued running. Left with no other option, the police fired two controlled shots, injuring Ahmed in the leg and subsequently recapturing him.

Both Mannan Ahmed and the seriously injured Lnk Jasimuddin Laskar were promptly taken to SMC&H for medical treatment. Further follow-up actions are underway to address the situation.

But a twist comes in when Ahmed, the accused shared a different story with the media.

He claimed that he had surrendered but was shot at by the police. He explained that he had fallen in love with a girl and they had been communicating for the last five months.

On Thursday, they eloped after the girl called him, saying she had left her parental home and threatened to kill herself if he didn't take her along. They mutually agreed to elope and had been living in different places since then.

Mannan Ahmed, while suffering from a bullet injury, added that as tensions began to mount on Saturday, they decided to surrender. He contacted the Sonai Police through the elected AP member, and both surrendered.

From Sonai, they were taken to Silchar, where the girl was sent to an NGO shelter, and he was taken for a medical check-up before being kept at the Silchar Sadar Police Station.

Around 2:30 AM, officials told him to get in a car to go to Lakhipur. The police van left, and he could hear the officials talking.

They took a reverse turn and went to Shibpur, where they asked him to get out of the car. Once he got out, he was shot in the leg.
