ChatGPT CEO and Founder, Sam Altman sacked as board 'loses confidence in his ability to lead'

OpenAI, the pioneering force behind ChatGPT, announced a significant leadership shift on Friday, as Sam Altman, the CEO and co-founder, has been removed from his position. The decision was conveyed in a statement, revealing that the board had lost confidence in Altman's leadership abilities, prompting his departure.

The statement clarified that the board's decision stemmed from a comprehensive review, indicating concerns about Altman's consistency in communicating candidly with the board. This lack of transparency was seen as an impediment to the board's effective discharge of its responsibilities.

As a response to this change, Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), will step in as the interim CEO. OpenAI expressed its intent to initiate a formal search for a permanent CEO to guide the organization forward.

Upon confirmation of his departure, Altman shared his reflections on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "I loved my time at OpenAI. It was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. Most of all, I loved working with such talented people. Will have more to say about what's next later."

With substantial backing from Microsoft, OpenAI gained prominence in the field of generative AI with the introduction of ChatGPT last November. Altman, 38, previously known for leading Y Combinator, served as the public face of OpenAI, showcasing the capabilities of generative AI technology during a global tour earlier this year.

The statement from OpenAI expressed gratitude for Altman's contributions to the founding and growth of the organization. Simultaneously, it emphasized the necessity of new leadership for the future trajectory of the company.
