Controversy at Assam State Film Awards as Nahid Afrin wins Best Playback Singer for a song she didn't sing
Assam singer Nahid Afrin was recently awarded the Best Playback Singer (Female) at the 8th Assam State Film Awards for a song she did not sing. The song titled 'Neelate Luka Bhaku' from the film Nijanor Gaan was actually sung by Zubeen Garg and Rupjyoti Devi. Nahid Afrin, on the other hand, sang a different song in the same film titled 'Natun Ejaak'.
The original singer of the song, Rupjyoti Devi, took to Facebook to share a picture of Nahid receiving the award from Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary along with a certificate accompanying the award. The controversy has raised questions about the transparency of the selection process for the awards.
Nahid Afrin, in a video posted on social media, clarified that she was unaware of the mix-up and that she had received a call from a member of the jury board informing her of the win. She went on to say that she had received so many calls inviting her to the award function that she decided to attend it, even though she was not sure which song the award was for.
She expressed her willingness to return the award if it was found that it was not meant for her. The Assam Cultural Affairs Department, which organized the awards, is yet to comment on the matter.
This incident highlights the importance of transparency in the selection process for awards and the need for clear communication between the organizers and the recipients. It is important for award shows to maintain the integrity of their process and ensure that deserving artists are recognized for their work.
