The 'Black Day' for Assam; Over 90 killed in serial bomb blasts 13 years ago.
Thirteen years have passed since the gruesome serial blasts rocked Assam on October 30, 2008. On this day, over 90 people lost their lives to nine near-simultaneous explosions.
On this day, 30th october 2008, Thirteen bomb blasts in quick succession ripped through Guwahati, the commercial capital of Assam, and three other towns, killing over 90 people and wounding 342.
Television channels showed some horrifying scenes of people lying on the streets, their clothes soaked in blood. The wounded were helped into ambulances by local people and police.
Serial blasts in Guwahati have been the most devastating since 1992 when Bodo militants bombed the Paltanbazar area killing 23. The prime accused in that blast rules the Bodoland Territorial Council while another is a minister in the Tarun Gogoi government. The Bodo militants also bombed the Brahmaputra Mail in December 1996 killing 46.
National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB – R) chief Ranjan Daimary, who was the mastermind behind the blasts, was sentenced to life in prison by a CBI court last year. He was briefly let out on bail earlier this year for the signing of the tripartite Bodo Accord in January last.
The day is marked as the Black Day in Assam’s history. On this day, the kin of the victims remember their dear ones with teary eyes. Many survivors still recall the harrowing day which claimed lives of several innocents.
