Principal of a Demow primary school in Assam’s Sivsagar district committed suicid after being unable to utilise a government smartphone app.

The use of the RIIMS App was previously made mandatory for the teaching staff of government-run schools by an order issued by the Assam government. The app, which is based on artificial intelligence, is used to track the attendance of school instructors. Aside from that, the software keeps track of students and teachers in a database.

The family of Kaliprasad Chetia, principal of Lakhmipathar LP School said he took the extreme step by not being able to operate the RIIMS online assistance system.

According to Chetia’s colleagues, he was depressed about not being able to cope with the new online support systems.

However, the suicide investigating officer said  “Son and wife of the deceased said that he drank regularly and that he used to leave home at midnight. He left home on Monday night and never returned. His son found his body in the morning at one of the school halls. “

He also added that the body has been sent for an autopsy and that further investigations are underway.
