In a significant development poised to bring about substantial economic growth and job opportunities, Tata Electronics Ltd is in the preliminary stages of establishing a cutting-edge semiconductor processing plant in Jagiroad, Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the conglomerate is prepared to invest approximately Rs 40,000 crore in the project, signaling a promising economic future for the region. The conglomerate has formally submitted its proposal to the Government of India and awaits the final approval after successful negotiations with the state government.

During a press conference on Friday, Chief Minister Sarma conveyed his excitement about the prospective project, stating, "There is very good news for us. Tata Electronics Ltd has submitted an application for setting up an electronic centre at Jagiroad." Jagiroad, strategically located in the Morigaon district, is situated approximately 55 km from Guwahati, Assam's largest city.

Preliminary discussions between the state government and Tata Group regarding the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant have been fruitful, leading to Tata's formal application to the Central Government for the necessary clearances. Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism, saying, "If all goes well, we will see a major investment in the state, which will create a positive environment for industrialization. We are in touch with the Centre and hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two."

Underlining the potential impact on employment, Sarma revealed that Tata has also initiated discussions with the state government to facilitate the training of 1,000 individuals for prospective employment opportunities at the semiconductor unit. "We used to always ask why electronics and IT industry did not come to our state. Now it is changing," he remarked.

The establishment of the semiconductor plant is poised to not only spur industrialization in Assam but also herald a new era of economic development and technological advancement in the region. The state eagerly anticipates the final approval from the Centre, heralding the commencement of this transformative and potentially game-changing project.
