Where the country is fighting against  COVID-19 and deaths are on the rise, it is now being speculated that Black Fungus disease has entered into Assam.

Two suspected cases of Black Fungus in Guwahati are speculated to be from Apollo Hospital, Guwahati and GATE Hospital, Noonmati. 

The first suspected patient in Apollo Hospital is a 27-year-old male and a resident of Dhing, Nagaon. The other patient is said to be from Guwahati. 

The patient from Guwahati is speculated to have flown in from Mumbai where 15 cases of Black Fungus have already been detected.

What is Black Fungus?  

Reports say that many patients in Delhi and Gujarat exhibit symptoms of the fungal infection called, 'Mucormycosis.' This infection is most likely to be seen in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 but have comorbidities such as diabetes and kidney failure. 

Patients whose immune systems are weak or compromised are at a higher risk of getting this infection. The symptoms of 'Black Fungus' are - Face numbness, swelling in the eyes, nose obstructions on one side, or pain.  

Amphotericin-B injections are being used to treat this life-threatening fungal infection
