Delhi AIIMS Doctors Perform Risky Heart Surgery of an Unborn Baby in 90 seconds. Know how !

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have performed an uncommon surgery on the "grape-sized" heart of a 28-week foetus inside the mother's womb in just 90 seconds.

This 28-year-old pregnant patient was admitted to the hospital with three previous miscarriages. The parents desired to continue with the current pregnancy after the doctors informed about the condition of the heart of the fetus in her womb and agreed to the procedure with a hope for better results.

This procedure was performed at the Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre, AIIMS by a team of interventional cardiologists and fetel medicine specialists which turned out successful. This procedure is known as Balloon dilation of an obstructed valve in the baby's heart and it is done under ultrasound guidance.

According to the team of doctors from Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Anesthesia, along with Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology( Fetel Medicine) of AIIMS, both the mother and the baby are doing well after the procedure. The teams of doctors are examining the growth of the heart chambers to decide baby's future management.
