Electricity Consumers Protest Soaring Tariffs in Silchar: Demand Immediate Revocation

Reported by: Samdipto Chakravarti

SILCHAR, October 4, 2023 — Today, the All Assam Electricity Consumers Association, represented by a delegation including Prof. Ajay Ray, Ranjit Choudhury, Haydar Hussain Choudhury, and Komal Chakraborty, submitted a memorandum to the District Collector's office, Cachar, urging the immediate revocation of the increased electricity tariffs. Addressing the rising discontent among the public, the association emphasized the unjust and arbitrary nature of the frequent load shedding and simultaneous tariff hikes, particularly in Silchar.

The association highlighted the severe financial strain imposed on ordinary citizens due to the exorbitant increase in essential commodities' prices. Despite this, the Assam government has consistently raised electricity tariffs under the guise of 'Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment,' burdening the public further. They pointed out the disparity with other states, where many provide free electricity up to 200 units, contrasting sharply with Assam's continuous tariff hikes.

Expressing deep concerns over the impact of smart meters, the association emphasized that electricity costs for consumers have surged dramatically over the past year. The unpredictable price hikes, coupled with various taxes, have eroded public trust. Despite these concerns, the government has persisted in its decision to raise tariffs, disregarding the citizens' economic challenges.

In response, the association demanded the complete withdrawal of increased electricity tariffs and the pre-paid smart meter system. They announced a campaign to collect five lakh signatures in protest against the government's unilateral decision. The association warned of an impending severe agitation if their demands were not promptly addressed, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
